Arsene Wenger continues to keep his cards close to his chest in regards to transfers, reaffirming that Arsenal haven’t concluded any deal for Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi yet and a deal is not yet close (via Arsenal.com)
Speaking to the press after Sunday’s 3-1 preseason win over Mexican side Chivas, Wenger was quizzed on reported interest in Mustafi, who has become the most heavily linked central defender in the wake of Per Mertesacker’s serious knee injury.
The Gunners boss remained evasive over discussing transfer targets and admitted a deal is not close to being concluded.
“We have not closed any deal with anybody at the moment. That’s the answer. You speak about Mustafi. Is it Mustafi or anybody else – we haven’t concluded anything at the moment,” Wenger told reporters (via Arsenal.com).
Asked directly if a deal was close, Wenger responded: “No”.
Reporters also attempted to find out if there was any fresh interest in Lacazette, a player Arsenal reportedly had a bid rejected for, but again a Poker-faced Wenger remained coy.
“I can understand that you are interested in transfers but I’m not ready to come out on any name,” he responded.
Certainly not a lot to go on from the Arsenal boss, who has many times in the past been on the brink of signing a player but remained oblivious to the press.
The need for a centre back was clearly evident again on Sunday, with both Calum Chambers and Rob Holding partial to a few dodgy moments. Although it is still preseason, the lack of an experienced central defensive option is a worry, and Arsene Wenger has his work cut out to ensure the Gunners bring in the necessary reinforcements before the Premier League opener in less than two weeks time.
