Arsene Wenger has confirmed Gabriel’s absence is as expected with the Brazilian set to be sidelined for six to eight weeks, while Jack Wilshere is back in training after a recent knee trouble but will miss the Premier League opener against Liverpool (via Arsenal’s official website).
Arsenal host the Merseysiders on Sunday at Emirates and will do so potentially without a senior centre back with Laurent Koscielny only just returning from his summer break and Gabriel ruled out for up to two months.
Wilshere’s recent knee injury also threw his involvement in doubt after missing the Gunners preseason trip to Scandanavia.
“Gabriel has an ankle problem, and will be out for six to eight weeks. It is a bit better than we feared at the start,” Wenger told Arsenal.com.
“Jack is doing well, but he will be short for Sunday. He is back in training but will not be completely ready for Sunday.”
Carl Jenkinson, who suffered a serious knee injury on loan at West Ham United last season is said to be on track with his recovery, while Wenger also provided an update on long term absentees Danny Welbeck and Per Mertesacker.
“Carl is doing well, and he should be back in November. He is on schedule for his return,” Wenger revealed.”
“We had very good news on Danny’s latest scan and Per is at the moment off his feet for three weeks, so of course if is a bit boring for him. He is with his family in Hannover, but on the football front he is very frustrated. We think it will be four to five months for both players.”
Elsewhere Mesut Ozil, Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny took part in a training session on Wednesday afternoon as they return to full training, however all three will surely miss the tie this weekend. Koscielny may have no choice but to participate however.
