Arsene Wenger has said he is confident that Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez will agree to new contracts soon. The pair have been at the club for three and two years respectively and both have two years left on their existing deals (via Arsenal.com).
They’re the two best players at the club and were some of the most exciting signings Arsenal have made in years. Mesut Ozil moved to the Emirates from Real Madrid in 2013 and Alexis Sanchez joined from FC Barcelona a season later. Both have two years left on their current deals and while there is no update on any possible new contract, the manager is confident they will agree to stay beyond that.
“We make progress always, but it is not always a quick process.” Wenger was speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s clash against Liverpool. “They still have two years [on their] contracts and there is no urgency as well.
Wenger claimed that the summer is not the time to be discussing a possible deal. “At the moment we have priorities, and most of the time contract extensions are done outside the window because it gives you a bit more time to focus on that.”
Regardless of a timescale, The Boss seemed confident the pair will stay. It is an absolute necessity that Arsenal keep hold of their best players and Ozil and Sanchez definitely fit into that category. Their signings represented a new period for the club and their sale would signal a backwards step.
