Former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini has joined Crystal Palace on a free transfer. The Frenchman left the Emirates in the summer after his contract expired and has signed a one-year deal at Selhurst Park (via The Guardian).
He made nearly 250 appearances for Arsenal in two spells at the club and Mathieu Flamini is remembered fondly by the majority of Gooners. When he wasn’t breaking legs out on the pitch, the Frenchman was busy become a potential multi-billionaire off it and now the 32-year-old has started a new challenge.
The Frenchman has signed for Crystal Palace on a season-long contract. The defensive midfielder will presumably act as cover for first choice players Yohan Cabaye, James McArthur and Joe Ledley.
It seems like a good move for both parties and the former-Arsenal man sounded pleased with the move. “Crystal Palace is a very ambitious club with great players and I am looking forward to being part of that squad.” Flamini said after the deal was completed. “It is a very interesting challenge for me and I am very excited to be here. I have had [a] chance to discuss the move here with Alan Pardew and he really helped my make my decision.”
Pardew also seemed pleased that this deal has been confirmed. “His playing ability will help us but also his leadership qualities and his ability of how to win games in a passing style.” He told the press. “I am delighted that we have secured a player of his stature.”
It was undoubtedly the correct decision not to give Flamini another contract at the Emirates during the summer. Arsenal’s midfield is stronger now than it was last season and the players who left the club – Flamini as well as Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky – all seem to have landed on their feet.
