Arsenal skipper Laurent Koscielny has expressed his frustration over his team’s constant struggle to chase the scoreline after failing to take the lead in recent matches.
The Gunners managed to cancel out Edinson Cavani’s first minute goal and earn a point from their Champions League group stage clash against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night. Missed chances by Cavani and crucial saves by David Ospina kept the scoreline at 1-0 until Alexis Sanchez finally equalised in the final 25 minutes of the match.
Centre-back Koscielny has called on his teammates to stop the habit of trailing behind as they continually make it harder for themselves to attain all three points. It was only over the weekend Arsenal had to comeback from being a goal down to win 2-1 against Southampton.
Speaking to BT Sport Koscielny said: “It’s like during the game against Southampton. We slept, and we need to change this in the future because every time we start 1-0 down, it’s difficult to win.”
“We need to be strong from the first minute to the end and to play our football. I think during the game we played well, but if we start like this it’s difficult.”
The French international scored a world class overhead kick which levelled Arsenal against the Saints over the weekend. A penalty in the last ten minutes guaranteed a second consecutive win for Wenger’s side but it was the third time they failed to keep a clean sheet.
Out of the four matches played in the Premier League so far, only once have Arsenal gone the full 90-minutes without conceding but it was a goalless draw at the King Power Stadium against Leicester City.
Though the ability to comeback and earn a victory after going a goal down is commendable, it isn’t always easy to achieve such a feat.
A 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain is a good result considering it was the toughest fixture of the Group Stage for the Gunners but it could have very easily been a loss. The resilience of Ospina and Cech can only keep out so many goals but not always will a striker miss clear chances like Cavani did for PSG. It will save a lot of trouble for Arsenal in the future if they take Koscielny’s advice and focus from the first whistle and come out of the blocks fighting.
