Per Mertesacker has given his verdict on summer signing Shkrodran Mustafi and is backing the Germany international to be a big hit at the Emirates Stadium.
Mustafi put in an impressive display alongside Laurent Koscielny at the heart of the Arsenal defence on Saturday as the Gunners ran out 3-0 winners over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.
The clean sheet was the first Mustafi has enjoyed since his arrival from Valencia, ensuring in-form Diego Costa was unable to continue his fine goalscoring form.
Mertesacker, who is not expected to return to action until next year after injuring a knee in pre-season, says he enjoyed the Gunners’ display and feels Mustafi is forging a great partnership with Laurent Koscielny.
“As a defender, I enjoyed watching how Laurent and Shkodran dealt with Diego Costa,” Mertesacker wrote in his programme notes ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League clash with FC Basel according to the Evening Standard.
“I think the two of them will be a great pairing and what I find most impressive is how quickly they’ve developed their partnership. They really complement each other.
“When they needed to get really tight, they did. When they needed to be strong, they were. I think their partnership is getting better and better.”
Mustafi and Koscielny will be hoping for their second clean sheet in a row against Basel on Wednesday night. The Gunners conceded an early goal to Edinson Cavani last time out in the Champions League and face a side that has scored 29 goals in their first nine Swiss Super League matches of the season.
