Arsene Wenger has criticised Lucas Perez for a perceived overuse of his left foot. The new signing scored his first and second goals for the Gunners during last night’s EFL Cup (TeamTalk).
Most Arsenal fans were pleased to see new signing Lucas Perez get off the mark for the club against Forest. His first came from the penalty stop with the score at 1-0. The Spaniard’s second came just ten minutes later after nicking the ball off the forest defence and rounding the goalkeeper. Wenger was pleased with his new man’s outing.
“He did well.” Wenger said after the match. “He’s quick, he’s determined…I like his second goal because he has shown not only technique but determination and fight for the ball and finishing and I like that.
“The part he played in the goal of Oxlade-Chamberlain shows his awareness of other people and it is intelligent play.”
However it wasn’t all positive from The Boss. The Frenchman had something to say about the striker’s style of play. Both of Perez’s goals were taken with his stronger left foot and it is something which Wenger picked up on.
“He uses well his left foot – a bit too much in my taste. He doesn’t use his right enough. Overall he’s like all the left-footed players, you know.”
Wenger isn’t wrong in that regard. Left footed players do generally seem more one-footed than their right equivalents. The Spaniard isn’t a complete player by any means. It’s good that Wenger is aware of the areas Perez needs to work on but it seems strange to mention it in the press.
