Alex Iwobi thought he would leave Arsenal on loan before earning a regular place in the first team since making the break through last season.
The 20-year-old got the chance to become one of Wenger’s regulars when he impressed by scoring in two consecutive victories against Everton and Watford towards the end of last season.
The quick rise of Iwobi has so far earned him five appearances in the current league season in which the winger has delivered by contributing to three goals and impressing in a wide role.
However, this wasn’t how Iwobi had expected his career to go at the Emirates. The youngster thought he would be sent on loan for career development before he could play in the first team.
“Honestly no, I didn’t expect to be where I am today,” the forward told Arsenal’s official weekly podcast.
“I thought [some] time ago I was going to be [out] on loan and probably get experience there before having experience in the first team.”
The faith Arsene Wenger has shown in the Nigerian also earned him a place in his national team over the weekend in the World Cup Qualifier tie where he scored to lead his side to a 2-0 victory, their first ever win against Zambia.
His impressive run this season has earned him a third deal in 12 months leading to a further rise to his £30,000 a week deal which runs until 2021.
Arsenal host Swansea City at the Emirates and Iwobi is expected to feature as the club welcomes the return of Premier League action on Saturday.
