Arsene Wenger has said that Alex Iwobi has the ability to take over the number 10 slot from Mesut Özil. The 20-year-old starred for The Gunners again last night and has become a crucial first team player on the left wing (via The Metro).
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain grabbed the headlines last night but Arsene Wenger praised another Arsenal winger after the match. The Boss declared that Alex Iwobi could take over the central attacking midfield position from Mesut Özil in the future.
The Nigerian international has usually been deployed from the left-hand side but Wenger sees his future further infield.
“You see, he is not a typical winger and I think he can play in that [number 10] role,” Wenger told The Metro.
“He turns the game forward, he passes the ball through the lines very well. He has a final ball in him. He is now a little bit, I think he has it all in the locker to pass and give the final ball.
“What you want from him now is the finishing, you know. That’s still a little part that is missing in his game. I think he is too nervous at the moment when he has the possibility to finish.”

Iwobi has made 11 appearances for the Gunners already this season and will undoubtedly make a whole lot more. The youngster has been mightily impressive and seems to balance the side well. However, as Wenger said, Iwobi’s game would greatly improve if he had more success in front of goal. If he can add that then there’s no reason he can’t play in the number 10 position.
