The Express reports that Arsenal are looking at Roger Schmidt as a potential replacement for Arsene Wenger. Wenger’s contract expires at the end of the season and the club are reportedly eyeing up the current Bayer Leverkusen boss (via the express).
We’re getting closer and closer to the day that Arsene Wenger is no longer the manager of Arsenal. The 67-year-old has spent over 20 years at the club but with his contract expiring at the end of the season and no sign of him agreeing to another, his time could come to an end in just a few months.
Regardless of whether he signs a new deal, the club now seem to be looking into some potential replacements. Eddie Howe and Thomas Tuchel have been mentioned in recent months but now a new name has been put forward.
Roger Schmidt has been in charge of Bayer Leverkusen since 2014 after a successful spell at Red Bull Salzburg. The 49-year-old presided over the Leverkusen side which beat Spurs at Wembley this week and spoke about his desire to manage in England one day.
“I like English football very much, because of the culture of football in the country,” Schmidt said.
“I’m contracted with Leverkusen until 2019 but, if it was possible in the future to be a manager of an English football team, it would be very interesting for me. But at the moment, I am very happy where I am.”

Schmidt has guided Leverkusen to the top four in the Bundesliga in both of his seasons in charge of the club and his side are now performing well in the Champions League. He isn’t the big name that many Arsenal fans would want but there are a number of parallels between Schmidt and another German manager in the Premier League, Jurgen Klopp.
“Klopp is a good inspiration for me.” Schmidt went on. “I like his active style of football and also his style as a coach. Dortmund beat Bayern Munich twice in the championships and the reason for that was that they played a very aggressive style.
“Klopp showed what is possible with a brave style of football. It’s good to see a manager develop in that style. If you want to over-perform then you have to play differently, play very aggressively.
“He is a good inspiration and example of that.”
Klopp is currently doing very well at Liverpool and if Schmidt could have a similar impact at the Emirates then maybe this is something the club should pursue.
