Petr Cech has insisted that Arsenal have a squad strong enough to win the Premier League. The 34-year-old said that the summer signings have really added depth to the club despite the growing injury problems (via The Mirror).
Perhaps Arsenal fans were too optimistic to think that things would be different on the injury front this season. It has long been the bane of every season’s hopes for the Gunners and the curse of the Arsenal physio room seems to be striking again.
It’s still unclear how long Alexis Sanchez will be out for while Hector Bellerin also appears to have picked up a knock while on international duty. The pair would join Santi Cazorla, Lucas Perez and Danny Welbeck on the sidelines but Petr Cech doesn’t think this is the end of Arsenal’s season.
The Czech stopper spoke about the injury problems the club has faced in the last few seasons but believes that with the depth of strength in the current squad, things are about to change.
“When we were unlucky with long-term injuries last season, we had to use the same players in so many games and you lack energy in certain parts of the season,” Cech told The Mirror
“We dropped points because we couldn’t rotate. This season we have strength in depth, you could see in the Champions League and domestic cup [games] and for the Premier League we keep using different players or can use the same players.
“The manager has this choice and I think we are benefitting so far. Everybody looks fit and ready to go game-by-game.
“I think we are as strong as anybody else in the league.
“The league is very competitive but I think we are one of the teams who has all the qualities to compete for the title and we know that.”
Cech and Arsenal sit fourth in the table as things stand, two points behind leaders Liverpool. There is still a long way to go in the race for the title but these next few weeks are crucial for the Gunners, especially if Alexis Sanchez’s injury is as serious as some fear. Beating Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United next week would be the perfect start to this period and give this team a massive psychological boost.
