Arsene Wenger has warned Mesut Ozil he will only become an Arsenal legend if he remains with the Gunners but says he can have the same impact on the club as Dennis Bergkamp did during his time in north London.
Bergkamp remains on the of the greatest players ever to wear the Arsenal shirt and won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups in 11 years at the club.
The Dutch star has been honoured with a statue outside the ground and when asked if Ozil could be held in the same regard as Bergkamp Wenger said it all depends on how he long he remains with the club.
“He can be a legend if he commits,” Wenger said via The Guardian. “Dennis Bergkamp committed for a long period, he played until he was 38. I wish we have 10 more years of Özil.
“To become a legend at the club you need to stay for a long time. If you stay two years you would not be a legend.”
Ozil’s current deal expires in 2018 but the Germany international is yet to agree an extension and Wenger has spoken about how negotiations are currently proceeding.

“We work on it,” he added. “A player needs to meet his needs inside a club. It is difficult not to be happy in London and happiness that a player has when he plays comes out by his performance.”
Having scored seven goals already this season all eyes will be on Ozil to impress against Spurs and Wenger admits he is hoping for another big performance from the 28-year-old.
“That’s what you want,” Wenger says. “Of course he can be dangerous but in big games there is always a lot of expectation from him. But I believe that depends more on the team performance. If the team performance is strong then Özil will always shine.”
Ozil has certainly produced the goods in the big games this season, the Germany international shone in the 3-0 win over Chelsea and a repeat performance on Sunday may well be needed to break down the Premier League’s tightest defence.
