Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was reportedly shocked that Arsene Wenger said the club had opened contract negotiations with the player. The midfielder has 18 months left on his current deal and insists that no negotiations over an extension have taken place (via The Mirror).
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain put in another good performance on the weekend before being substituted with 20 minutes left in the match. It’s a familiar story for the midfielder who has completed the 90 minutes in just four Premier League matches in the last 18 months. Only Olivier Giroud has been used from the bench more than the Englishman this season which is reportedly a massive source of frustration for the Englishman.
The Englishman is enjoying his best goalscoring season at the club but has just 18 months remaining on his current deal. Arsenal are very publically in contract negotiations with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Özil and Arsene Wenger stated that the club are also speaking to Oxlade-Chamberlain about a renewal. Wenger’s comments reportedly came as some surprise to Oxlade-Chamberlain who insists that no negotiations have taken place.
The boss also spoke today about the midfielder’s contract. “I want Oxlade-Chamberlain to stay at the club,” he said in his pre-match press conference. “I bought him at a very young age and I think he is developing well.
“This season he is making steps, he is moving forward and overall when you invest so much time and work and the player has as well [you want him to stay]. I think the player loves it here. He is integrated with the qualities we want him to have and overall I want him to stay.”
Given the Englishman’s form and lack of game time, it wouldn’t be out of the question for the former Southampton to be considering leaving the club. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen and on current form, it would be in Arsenal’s best interest to retain the player’s services. Oxlade-Chamberlain is on fine form and hopefully, contract negotiations will progress well once the situation with Sanchez and Özil has been resolved.
