Shkodran Mustafi has said that his Arsenal and Germany team-mate Per Mertesacker has helped him a lot since arriving in North London. Mustafi was speaking to Arsenal Player about the Gunners’ captain (via Arsenal.com).
Per Mertesacker may not have played for Arsenal this season but it seems that he is still influencing the club off the field. The 32-year-old has helped fellow German Shkodran Mustafi settle at the club and the former Valencia man has spoken about Mertesacker’s influence.
“Per helped me a lot,” Mustafi told Arsenal Player. “When I had just arrived, having a person at the club with so much experience and with the personality he has helped me a lot.”
Mustafi received praise for how quickly he adapted to life in the Premier League. His arrival from Valencia came late in the transfer window but the German wasted no time in settling into the first team.
“He helps me on the pitch because when he sees things,” Mustafi went on. “He corrected me a few times. He’s not just the type of player who says, ‘You didn’t do that well enough’ or, ‘You have to do it this way’, he tells you why.
“In the short time that I worked with him in the national team, I learned a lot from him.”

They haven’t actually taken to the field together but it may not be long before we see a Mertesacker/Mustafi partnership. Mertesacker is back after his injury and should be match fit within a couple of weeks.
It’s good that Mertesacker is still fulfilling his role as club captain despite being out of the side. From this interview, the German’s role in the squad still seems to be very important. Hopefully, we will get a chance to see Mertesacker back in action with experienced options always welcome at the back.
