New signing Cohen Bramall’s shirt number at Arsenal has been revealed and the youngster will make club history with it. The number 85 shirt is the highest Arsenal Football Club has ever given a player (via The Mirror).
He’s already made a splash with the way he joined the club but Cohen Bramall could soon write his name into the football history books…for his shirt number. The Mirror reports that Bramall is set to be given the number 85 shirt by Arsenal which, incidentally, is the highest number the club has given a player.
Personalised shirt numbers were introduced in the English game in 1993 and Arsenal have worn some high numbers down the years. More recently Hector Bellerin wore 39 and before him, Nicklas Bendtner had 52 on his back. The highest number the Gunners have given a player before now is 71 which was given to Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill in 2012 but the youngster never played for the first-team.
But that’s not all, should Cohen Bramall make it into the pitch in a league match with 85 on his back, he’d make English football history. Records are sketchy but the general consensus is that the highest number ever worn in a Premier League match is 78 which was worn by striker Jose Angel Pozo for Manchester City in 2014.
High shirt numbers are the norm in other countries. Places like Italy regularly feature players with shirts numbering in the late 90s but for England, this is new. Cohen Bramall may well change his number in the future but for now, he’s a record waiting to happen.
