Arsene Wenger has heaped the praise on Danny Welbeck after the forward’s incredible return to the starting lineup on Saturday. The forward marked his first start in eight months with two goals as the Gunners breezed into the Fifth Round of the FA Cup (via Arsenal.com).
It wasn’t too difficult to see the standout players on Saturday evening. Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott bagged two and three goals respectively, helping Arsenal to a comfortable 5-0 win at Saint Mary’s. Arsene Wenger has now taken the time to praise Welbeck for the way he has returned from injury.
“To come out of what he has come through, you need to be mentally strong,” Wenger said in his pre-match press conference. “To play like he played on Saturday, you need to work hard physically. That’s not a gift of God. You have to go through all kind of suffering to come back to that level of fitness.”
It was a surprise to see Welbeck look so sharp. Despite missing the last eight months and with just a few minutes to his name so far, the forward last an hour and still looked full of energy. Theo Walcott has also been absent through injury but marked his return with a hat-trick.
“I’m pleased with their [Welbeck and Walcott] individual performances. We have scored many goals since the start of the season and Danny was not there. To add him to the squad as well gives us huge offensive potential.
“Now I have to use the strikers well, in the right moment and without destroying the balance of the team. I would add Lucas to that as well. He did very well on Saturday to create chances.
“Offensively, we have many players who can produce and score.”

Wenger isn’t wrong there. The Gunners have multiple options in attack with Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez, Lucas Perez, Theo Walcott and now Danny Welbeck all getting on the scoresheet in recent weeks. Arsenal will need them all to chip in with goals if they are to achieve success in the coming months, starting with Watford on Tuesday.
