Arsenal have been handed a huge boost ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich after Xabi Alonso was forced out of training.
The midfielder was unable to complete the session on Monday and left the pitch clearly in pain after suffering a knee problem, according to German newspaper Bild.
Alonso is now a huge doubt for the round of 16 fixture at Allianz Arena, adding to Carlo Ancelotti’s current injury problems. The German champions are already without Jerome Boateng and Franck Ribery although Arturo Vidal and Thiago Alcantara are fit and available.
The former Liverpool man has made 25 appearances for Bayern in all competitions this season, scoring three times, and would be a big miss if he were ruled out of the tie.
The 35-year-old remains a key player for Bayern and his experience in the competition is vital having lifted the trophy twice, with Liverpool in 2005 and Real Madrid in 2014.
Arsenal also have injury problems ahead of the game with Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey ruled out and Arsene Wenger has decisions to make in central midfield.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain partnered Francis Coquelin against Hull, although Mohamed Elneny is also an option having returned from international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Reports have also claimed that Wenger is considering dropping Mesut Ozil for the game in Munich with the Germany international out of form currently, and the boss admitting he is struggling for confidence.
The loss of Alonso would certainly be good news for Arsenal who will be out to end a run of six straight exits at the round of 16 stage against a side they know well, and one that has not quite hit the heights of previous campaigns yet under Ancelotti.
