Arsenal are reportedly tracking Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka as the German youngster’s contract wears down. The 22-year-old’s current deal at the Bundesliga side is due to expire at the end of next season and the Gunners are eyeing a discount deal (via The Metro).
Arsene Wenger’s future may still be up in the air but it seems that the club is still planning for the future on the pitch.
Central midfield wasn’t exactly a problem area at the start of the season but a mix of injuries and suspensions left the Gunners exposed, particularly in January.
With doubts over the futures of Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and question marks over the reliability of Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey, the centre of midfield could do with some reinforcement.
As has often been the case in recent years, Arsenal are looking to Germany for a solution and it seems that Leon Goretzka is at the top of the list.
The midfielder signed for Schalke in 2013 and has stood out in the centre of the park. He’s perhaps one of the brightest sparks in this new generation of talented young players in Germany.
Goretzka possesses very good technical abilities and at over six-foot, is different to most other players in the Arsenal squad. It’s also important to note that the 22-year-old’s contract with the Bundesliga side expires next season so any transfer away from Schalke would be for a fraction of its usual cost.
Goretzka is a very good young player and would be an excellent signing for the Gunners. He could potentially form an impressive partnership with Granit Xhaka with the pair possessing contrasting but complementary styles. However, Arsenal would face stiff competition for the midfielder’s signature with Juventus reportedly interested in his signing. It’s difficult to justify signing for the Gunners right now over a club like the Italian giants.
