Olivier Bierhoff has defended Mesut Ozil’s performance in the 5-1 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich and says his team let him down at Allianz Arena.
Arsene Wenger’s side saw their European hopes all but ended for another season with a humiliating defeat after a dramatic second-half collapse.
Ozil was criticised by many for his performance against Carlo Ancelotti’s side but Germany general manager Bierhoff has leapt to his defence.
“If I look at Mesut Ozil, who was singled out following the 5-1 loss to Bayern, ” he said via ESPN. “In that match there wasn’t much support for a player like Mesut, who lives on his footballing qualities.
“The team let him down a bit.”
Bierhoff also compared Ozil with Julian Draxler who was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal before opting to join Paris Saint-Germain in the January transfer window.
Draxler has thrived following his move from Wolfburg and was on target as PSG inflicted a shock shock 4-0 defeat on Barcelona in the Champions League with Bierhoff explaining why he has settled in so well.
“He [Draxler] has got very good footballers around him. That helps him,” he added
Aaron Ramsey has recently insisted Arsenal players have let manager Wenger down at times with below-par performances as another season that promised so much looks set to end in disappointment.
Arsenal now need a strong finish to the campaign and will hope to give their top four hopes a huge boost with victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday.
