Lucas Perez has told the Spanish media that he believes Arsene Wenger will still be in charge of Arsenal next season. The Frenchman is still yet to agree to a new contract but Perez believes he will do just that (via Sport Witness).
Whatever happens on the pitch, the big story for the rest of Arsenal’s season will be the future of Arsene Wenger. After 21 years at the club, the events of this season have led to perhaps the biggest backlash against his management from supporters.
The defeats to Bayern Munich along with four losses in five Premier League matches have tipped the balance against Wenger. However, a couple of players have come out in support of the Frenchman over the international break and now Lucas Perez has done the same.
The 28-year-old moved to the Emirates in the summer but hasn’t exactly been a crucial part of the first-team. Perez has seven goals in his 21 matches for the Gunners but most of those have come in cup competitions. Despite that, he spoke to Marca about the rest of the season.
“We are very excited to re-enter the Champions League and for the semifinals of the FA Cup,” he told the Spanish publication before the focus turned to the future of Arsene Wenger.
“The relationship I have with Wenger is good and I think he will continue,” Perez confirmed. “but he has not yet communicated it to anyone.”
It’s not really a surprise to see a number of Arsenal players come out in support of Arsene Wenger during this international break. They’re hardly going to say they hope the manager leaves but it is interesting to see the sources. So far, Nacho Monreal and Olivier Giroud have said publically that they hope Wenger stays at the club and we can now add Lucas Perez to that list. Hopefully, we’ll soon find out whether they prove to be correct.
