Michael Ballack has told Sky Sports that he believes Mesut Özil’s future at the Emirates could be dependent on Arsene Wenger. Wenger’s deal is set to expire in the summer and with just 12 months remaining on Özil’s current contract, Ballack thinks the two are linked (via Sky Sports).
The futures of some of Arsenal’s biggest names are the big topics of discussion at the moment. Arsene Wenger’s contract expires in the summer and the deals for both Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Özil run until next year. Neither have announced whether they will sign another but they could all be linked.
Former Germany captain Michael Ballack believes that the futures of Wenger and Özil are indeed dependent on one another, from Özil’s perspective at least. “It is difficult to say really (if he should stay at Arsenal), he told Sky Sports.
It is difficult to say really (if he should stay at Arsenal), he told Sky Sports.
“A player like him, who has played for Real Madrid and now Arsenal and who knows the Premier League and La Liga, he has his own feeling and experience.
“And there are not many clubs where he can go now and who can afford him. I think he needs to feel comfortable with the decision that he makes.
“But it also depends on what Arsene Wenger does and they have a good relationship and maybe that is why he is waiting a bit.”
Ballack may not know personally if that is how Özil is thinking but there could be some truth in that. The former Real Madrid made it no secret that Arsene Wenger was one of the main reasons he moved to Arsenal in 2013 and Ballack believes the Gunners would miss him if he left.
“He is one of the best players in the world at the moment,” the former Chelsea man went on. “He has a great left foot, a great touch, a good view for the game, combined with his speed with the ball especially. He can have a huge influence on the game and can change games.
“What he can improve is mentally how he deals with certain situations, as if he feels comfortable on the pitch, then he is one of the best players in the world.
“But everyone has difficult situations in the game where you get criticism and you have to go through that and deal with it.
“But I just wish he could step up a bit more and be a bit more against the opinions of the media, fans, or whoever, because he is a good player and sometimes he should have more confidence.
“And then he can maybe take another step towards becoming a world-class player because he has the potential.”
It’s obvious that Ballack thinks a lot of Mesut Özil as a player. The Gunners’ number 11 showed he was every bit the player Ballack thinks he is in the earlier parts of the season but has since faded. Hopefully, the future of the manager can be sorted quickly – whichever outcome that may be – and Özil can agree to a new contract because there aren’t many players like him in the world.
