Arsene Wenger has claimed that Arsenal were very close to signing Monaco youngster Kylian Mbappe last year and admits the Gunners are still interested in landing the forward.
Mbappe has become one of the hottest properties on the continent this season after a stunning campaign with Monaco that has seen him score 24 goals.
Wenger has previously admitted his interest in Mbappe and has now explained that he almost signed him last year before the player opted to sign a new Monaco deal.
“The player would tell you that I was at his home last year to try to get him here,” Wenger said via Standard Sport. “Because he was at the end of [his] contract but Monaco managed to keep him and the decision was very, very tight.
“But I could understand it as well because he was educated there and at the end decided to stay there.”
Mbappe has recently been linked with moves to Real Madrid and Manchester United and Wenger feels he will have his pick of the clubs if he opts to leave the Ligue 1 side.

“Can Arsenal get him? I don’t know, that’s down to him,” he added. “You know certainly as I do that today he will decide where he goes and say: Real Madrid? Maybe. Barcelona? Maybe. Arsenal? Manchester? He can go where he wants.
“So I don’t know what is his deep aspirations but maybe the best thing for him is to stay one more year at Monaco.”
There is no doubt that Mbappe will be a stunning signing and although Arsenal may be in the hunt Wenger has also recently admitted they may struggle to afford to bring him to north London.
