We are apparently in talks with Napoli regarding left-back Faouzi Goulam, although we are facing competition from Atletico Madrid, according to Spanish publication El Mundo Deportivo.
The 24-year-old is a top target for Atletico boss Diego Simeone, who is looking to reinforce his left side. The report suggests he was keen on bringing Filipe Luis back to La Liga from Chelsea, but has been forced to look elsewhere after hearing Jose Mourinho’s valuation of the player.
We currently have two solid left-backs in Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal, although we could arguably improve on both. The Spaniard was phenomenal last season, and was a vast improvement on the unreliable player that joined the club in 2013. Gibbs hasn’t developed the way we would have hoped however, and was deservedly usurped by his 29-year-old teammate.
Ghoulam is far more attack-minded than both our current options, which would certainly offer us a different dimension going forward. He is arguably inferior defensively though, and that could see us suffer against the bigger teams.
No fee has been reported, but regardless of expenditure, it’s hard to see this one coming off.
