Werder Bremen’s director of sport Klaus Allofs expects Per Mertesacker’s switch to Arsenal to be finalised without a hitch, with the two teams reaching an agreement and just a few things are left to be sorted.
“Everything has been agreed between Werder and Arsenal,” he told Germany’s dpa agency. “There are just a few things that are missing before we can announce the transfer as complete.”
Mertesacker is currently with the Germany national team in Dusseldorf preparing for Friday’s Euro 2012 qualifier with Austria and cannot expect to be given any more free time.
“Per asked me if he could have the day off because he had an offer,” revealed Germany coach Joachim Low yesterday. “I expect him back this evening.”
So Wenger has finally added to the backline, even though it’s taken a 8-2 thrashing and two months of speculation, Mertesacker is a perfect addition that will hopefully shore up the defence and develop a formidable partnership with Vermaelen. Well done Wenger, so who will be next? Santos looks like a done-deal, the main question that still remains is what midfielder will arrive at the Emirates. Will it be Arteta, Hazard, Martin or M’Vila? Or maybe Clint Dempsey? Rumours are flying all over the show, with the Gunners linked to every man on the planet, it’s going to be an interesting 12 hours for the Gunners.
