Much was expected from Squillaci after completing a £3million move from Sevilla last summer, with manager Arsene Wenger describing the 31-year-old as a centre back with ‘quality and experience’.
The French international made 32 appearances and scored two goals – including the winner against Stoke City in February which doesn’t sound too bad, however he was labelled a flop by many critics after several high-profile mistakes and received a ridiculing from his own supporters.
Newly promoted French minnows Evian were strongly linked with an offer for Squillaci over the summer, but they refused his over the top wages, rumoured to be around £50,000, consequently he was forced to stay in North London.
A troublesome calf injury has kept Squillaci out until now, and with a number of defenders pushing him down the pecking order it may be hard for the Frenchman to get a decent amount of playing time this term. Wenger revealed his latest team news:

Benayoun and Squillaci will be back in normal training on Friday or Saturday. Squillaci has been out for a long time so he won’t be fully match fit. Benayoun has more match fitness [and is way better].
Ok, he didn’t say the last part in the quote..but it is frustrating that we can’t sell players when we want to (Bendtner anyone?) which would free up space for Wenger to buy better players. Get rid of Djourou and Squillaci and bring in Gary Cahill, its not rocket science!
