The Gunners are weighing up a decisive £24.7m bid for Porto striker Jackson Martinez. Such a bid would trigger a release clause in the player’s contract and leave us free to discuss terms over a move.
Arsenal transfer news
Reports in the Daily Express claim that we have edged ahead of Liverpool in the race for the Colombian’s signature, while the Porto president – Nuno Pinto da Costa – has admitted that the 28-year-old is likely to leave.
He said: “He’s a player we want to keep, but we cannot stop someone paying the clause. Jackson went on vacation and so when he returns we will try to renew his deal just like last year.”
The addition of Martinez would certainly be a huge boost to our Premier League title aspirations ahead of next season. The former Chiapas player has scored 92 goals in 132 games for his Portuguese employers, with a career-best of 32 coming this very season.
A real poacher of goals, you can’t help but feel that this is the sort of player that we’ve really been lacking in recent years. His potential addition is an extremely enthralling prospect, especially considering that he should fit well with what we already have – the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, who can feed him chances.
