Alex Song has impressed this season doing what he does best as a defensive midfielder and is considered integral to the first-team by screening the back-four. But with speculation over Seydou Keita’s future at the Camp Nou, Barcelona rate the Cameroon international as an ideal replacement.
Keita has drawn interest from Premier League rivals Liverpool with the Mali midfielder also hinting at a move away from Barcelona at the end of the season, which would leave Barcelona needing to fill the gap.
Song still has three years to run on his contract, but as he is viewed as an integral player in the Arsenal line-up by Arsene Wenger, the gunners are wanting to extend his contract for reportedly four more years. No doubt these are negotiations Barca will watch closely.
If Song is to refuse a contract extension it is claimed that Barca are willing to pay in the region of £15m for the Cameroon’s signature next summer. It is reported Guardiola will first talk with former team-mate Cesc Fabregas who rates Song highly.
With Song playing such a important role in the team, it would definitely not be ideal to lose someone of his stature especially as he is only just reaching his peak at 24-years-old. Hopefully Wenger and co are able to retain his services and persuade him to sign a contract extension! What do you guys think? Should we keep him or would we better to cash in on him and try sign another defensive midfielder? Feel free to leave a comment below!
