Despite the constant speculation that Arsene Wenger will sign an established Premier League defender, but not one has even come close to arriving. It’s been reported all over the papers today that Everton have rejected a big from Arsenal for Englishman Phil Jagielka, who has been a known Wenger-target for awhile now.
Everton are determined to hang on to centre-back Phil Jagielka, and the Gunners have reportedly made a £10million offer to take the 28-year-old to the Emirates Stadium, which was rejected out of hand. This was £2million lower than the one made 12 months ago, and Everton view the bid as being well below the player’s market value, particularly as the defender signed a new four-year contract in March.
Why is Wenger offering peanuts for a reinforcement that is ABSOLUTELY necessary I just don’t know, I guess he know’s what he’s doing and personally I am just going to have to be patient and trust him. However trials seem to have gone cold in recent weeks in regards to two other main targets Chris Samba and Gary Cahill, with their respective managers claiming that no bids have been lodged for their star centre-backs.
Kean, Blackburn’s manager, told Sky Sports News yesterday “We have had no bids for Chris (Samba) and we have had no bids for any other player at this stage and we would like to keep it like that,”
“Chris is only a couple of months into a five-year contract, so hopefully the bids don’t come in and we can keep Chris as part of a defence that proved very, very solid towards the end of the season.”
Bolton manager Owen Coyle has also expressed that no bids have been received for their star centre-back Gary Cahill, so what is going on? Arsenal are still hot favourites to sign both of these players, Samba is favourite at 2/7, with Cahill at 2/5, (check out and bet on transfers here).

So it seems inevitable that we will acquire at least one of these three defenders, but it’s just a matter of time, because when it comes to Wenger he likes to take his time with transfers. But if we don’t acquire a centre-back soon then surely it will not benefit the team at the start of the season as it takes time to fit into a new club, especially to ‘play the Arsenal way’, so wouldn’t you think it would be wiser to finish up your transfer business as soon as possible (like Man United have) and just get cracking with your new signings? If only we could be Wenger for a day or two…
