It has been claimed by the Daily Mail that Chelsea have told Arsenal that they want a quick decision on whether they want to sign Israeli midfielder Yossi Benayoun permanently.
Benayoun is required to return to Stamford Bridge as he has reached the end of 12 month loan period in which he proved to be an excellent squad player.
The Israeli has played a significant part in Arsenal’s campaign this year and has been a reliable back-up midfield player for Arsene Wenger scoring 6 goals in 25 appearances.
Benayoun played his biggest part in Arsenal colours at the back end of the season, starting the last three games of the Premier League and notching up two very important goals that ultimately got us into the Champions League.
Obviously at 32 years of age if he was signed permanently by Arsenal he would be a fringe player in the squad, but an experienced fringe player who has great work ethic and reasonable quality.
In saying this though, we now have Lukas Podolski, Andrey Arshavin (if he’s not sold), Ryo Miyaichi and Oxlade-Chamberlain who would likely provide adequate cover in the wide areas if need be. Perhaps his saving grace would be that none of these players play the kind of defensive game Benayoun has played so well for Arsenal.

In terms of central midfield, Arsenal’s will be completely crowded if you factor in the players that are set to return form injury next season and it seems that his ability to play this position will play no factor into the decision to keep him on.
What do you guys think? Should Arsene sign Benayoun permanently or do we already have enough players in the squad as cover? Do you think his experience and defensive style could be enough to get him a permanent place at the Emirates? In any case, he definitely deserves some praise for what he has done for Arsenal this past season! Feel free to leave a comment below of discuss a possible transfer for Yossi Benayoun here!
