According to virtually every source available, the deal for Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud has been agreed upon with the official announcement of the striker’s signing postponed only due to Euro 2012.
The potential signing of Giroud has been heavily speculated already for weeks and it seems according to reports Arsenal have agreed to meet the release clause for the Frenchman, which in thought to be in the region of £9.6m to 12.8m.
The Frenchman was joint top-scorer in Ligue 1 last term netting an impressive 21 goals and also provided 9 assists, significantly helping his club to the Ligue 1 title.
Giroud is understood to have agreed to a four year deal reported to be in the region of £50,000 pounds a week, which is currently three-times more than what he currently earns at Montpellier.
While the news of his signing has media commenting on the uncertainty around Robin van Persie, I personally think that Giroud will be the replacement for fringe players such as Chamakh and Park who have simply not performed and are likely to be heading for the exit.
Giroud injects some fresh blood into Arsenal’s front-line alongside Arsenal’s other new signing Lukas Podolski and will no doubt provide added depth and quality for Wenger’s team.
