Reports claim that the Gunners do not want a permanent deal for Essien, but are rather only after the Ghanaian on a season-long loan with our most recognised defensive midfielder Alex Song already having left for Barcelona.
While there is no doubt Essien has proven himself to be an immense player in the past, there is obviously question marks over his fitness and whether he is simply passed his used-by date.
As we all know Essien suffered a serious injury to his knee rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament and miniscus in the pre-season of the 2010/11 season, leading to the Ghanaian dropping down the pecking order at Chelsea.
Essien has yet to feature this season and considering that Wenger said only a ‘top, top player’ would be considered at this stage in the transfer window I wouldn’ t say I am optimistic over this signing anyway to be honest.
Essien would prove to be a good squad player to cover for Wilshere while he is on the treatment table and Arteta if he too gets injured, but it is hardly the ambitious transfer we were all hoping for in finding a replacement for Alex Song, especially considering Arsenal have recouped all the money they spent on Cazorla, Podolski and Giroud by selling both Song and Van Persie.
