Shaw has yet to make his Saints first team debut but could still command an expensive price tag of around £4million due to his promise. He was an unused substitute in the third round FA Cup tie with Coventry and it is believed that the starlet has agreed a professional deal with the club which begins when he turns 17 in July.
Southampton’s academy has produced some outstanding youngsters that have made it to the top flight such as Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and more recently Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Football Association director of football development, Sir Trevor Brooking, spoke out on the talented English youth that is coming through the ranks:
You will start to see players coming through the likes you have never seen pull on an England shirt before.
We have some very technically gifted players coming through,’ [before going on to mention Shaw as one of these talents.]
Because he is not yet 17 there is an opportunity for Arsenal to nab the youngster before he can officially sign his contract with Southampton.
He seems like he is a very talented player and if he turns out to be anywhere near as good as Gareth Bale then he’s worth signing! The best option for the Gunners would be to fork out the £4m and loan him back to Southampton to continue his development for another season then bring him back as part of the reserve team setup.
