According to an exclusive article by The Mirror, Arsenal are preparing to smash their current transfer record and splash out £30m for Dortmund’s star midfielder Mario Gotze so it is probably wise to take this news with a pinch of salt.
It is claimed that the move by the gunners is too show a statement of intent, in particular to Robin van Persie who has only 18 months remaining on his contract and has delayed contract negotiations until the end of the season.
As well as this, the injection of Gotze into the first-team would also give more chance for the gunners to achieve Champions League qualification by finishing in the all-important top-four spot.
It is believed that the gunners lost out on the German wonder-kid last summer after leaving the deal too late to get done in time.
While I believe out of all the big names linked with us Gotze looks the most likely, for Wenger to spend £30m on a player after never breaking the £20m barrier in all his years at Arsenal seems quite slim and anything below might not tempt Dortmund to sell after stating they are adament Gotze will not leave in the summer.
But with Gotze apparently only willing to go to two clubs after his time at Dortmund, Arsenal and Barcelona, perhaps this would ward off other big clubs from grabbing his signature. Hopefully it is a credible claim! I would love to see the German play for the gunners, but looking at it realistically lets just say I am not getting my hopes up until it actually happens.

But with the likes of Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, Van Persie, Gervinho already, if you WERE to throw Gotze into the mix you could only drool at the possibilities! What do you guys think? Looking at it realistically do you think Arsene would spend big to get Gotze to the Emirates? Feel free to leave a comment below!
