According to The Star, Arsene Wenger wants to wrap up a deal for Newcastle’s Jose Enrique as a first priority when he returns from Arsenal’s tour of Asia today.
Despite Wenger confirming that Gibbs was set to be Clichy’s successor (who moved to Manchester City for £7million earlier this month), the Gunners boss seems to have thankfully come to his sense and will make his move for the Spanish left-back to create more competition for Gibbs.
A source in China said: “Arsene is aware of the news coming from Newcastle that Enrique is holding out for a club that can offer him Champions League football.
“Once he is back in England the chance of a transfer will be explored.”
Toon manager Alan Pardew is already resigned to losing the highly-rated defender before the new season and he is there for the taking for Arsenal if Wenger fashions a bid for the Spanish defender .
Kieran Gibbs, 21, has potential to be Arsenal’s first-choice leftback, but as he is still so young and there isn’t much competition for the position (only Traore and Vermaelen as a last resort) so the acquisition of Enrique would be very much welcomed by Arsenal fans and provide more cover for the defence that will inevitably suffer injuries with the amount and intensity of games.
