The Belgian took over the armband from the departed Van Persie last summer and despite providing a solid partnership with Mertesacker earlier in the season, numerous mistakes in the second half of the campaign restricted him to the bench.
It was a bold move by Wenger to drop his captain but it worked and turned out to be a stroke of genius. Koscielny stepped in alongside Mertesacker and together they formed a solid centre half pairing – essentially the crucial component to Arsenal’s resurgence.

He has a contract until 2015 and is still a magnificent talent despite the negative hype surrounding him. He played well when Mertesacker was suspended for the Norwich victory and perhaps the relegation to the bench will rejuvenate his form like Szczesny.
The 27-year-old did however produce some horrific defending from time to time including the 2-1 loss to the Spuds. But he still has a future with the Gunners and they should do everything in their power to keep him. Having three world class centre halves should certainly be the minimum.
