Now that it has been revealed that German Lukas Podolski will officially join the Gunners after the regular season, the media are now focusing on another speculated Arsenal target Jan Vertonghen.
Following the signing of Podolski both The Daily Mail and the The Mirror claim that in a bid to continue his early dealings in the transfer market Arsene Wenger is set to follow-up with a move for Ajax defender Vertonghen.
The Belgian is on the last year of his contract and it is claimed that Arsenal want to secure his signature for a cut-price deal of £7m, despite reported interest from Tottenham, Newcastle and Chelsea.
Vertonghen has made it clear on a number of occasions that he will be leaving Ajax this summer and has also hinted that Arsenal would be his preferred destination.
Looking at the facts realistically though, even if we were interested in signing the Belgian we would have to at least get rid of some fringe players first which may be a tough ask considering the wages they are on at the Emirates.

Currently Arsenal have Vermaelen, Koscielny, Djourou, Squillaci, Mertesacker and up-and-comer Miquel available at the centre-back position, which currently feels like too many players.
Out of this group, it is pretty clear that Djourou and Squillaci would be the two players to exit in order to make way for Vertonghen, but with Djourou only just recently signing a long-term contract it is unclear whether he will be let go.
In any case, the signing of Vertonghen would be immense to our defence and would allow a degree of rotation and depth without sacrificing any solidity. In saying this though, without even thinking about price I don’t think any move will be made until Arsene knows certain players are virtually confirmed to be off the wage roll.
You never know though! This transfer window has already turned out to be a completely different one to last summer already where Arsene has already named his first transfer even before the window has officially opened! So in that respect there is a chance it could happen sooner than you think!
What do you guys think? Is the reported interest in Vertonghen legit? Would he be a great signing for the Gunners? Feel free to leave a comment below!
