With the end of the transfer window looming, long-term Arsenal target Gary Cahill has finally been subject to an Arsenal bid after the gunners have failed to land primary target Jagielka as well as Blackburn defender Samba.
Wenger has already publicly stated that he has intentions to strengthen midfield in the remaining days of the transfer window and it is also widely expected that he will strengthen the centre of defence as well.
While it is good to see activity in the market for a proven centre-back, the offer is a bit of a laugh considering Bolton value the defender at around three-times what the gunners are offering coupled with Arsenal’s now HUGE transfer kitty.
It is no secret manager Owen Coyle is willing to sell their prized asset at a reasonable price, but it has been reported that insiders within Bolton claim the Arsenal bid is ‘taking the mickey’.
But Arsene, with his strong stance on not paying inflated prices, believes the fact that Cahill is in the last year of his contract has to be factored into the equation.
There is no doubt Cahill would provide a great amount of stability and experience to an Arsenal back-line that has been subject to numerous injuries already in this early stage of the season. With Traore set for a loan-move to QPR and injury prone Gibbs our first choice left-back, the signing of Cahill would allow Vermaelen to shift out left if needed while the centre of defence can still remain solid with Cahill at its centre. But whether Wenger decides to up his bid for the Englishman remains to be seen…
