Arsenal are reportedly looking to negotiate a new contract with star player Alexis Sanchez, according to ‘a senior Arsenal source’ (via the Mirror).
The Chilean international is unquestionably one of our best players, and a world-class talent. After joining the club from Barcelona last summer, he hit the ground running – ending up as our top scorer and winning the Arsenal Player of the Season award. He then featured regularly for the Chilean national side at the Copa America as they won the tournament.
Since returning, he had been relatively quiet by his standards, which can be attributed to a lack of rest for the player. His form seems to be returning however, as he has scored four goals for the Gunners in the previous week.
His exploits for both club and country have reportedly drawn the interest of other big clubs, and manager Arsene Wenger has, according to the Mirror, decided to offer him a lucrative contract to convince him to stay on at the Emirates. The new deal is apparently to the tune of £130,000 a week and will tie him down for a further five years. The talks will start before Christmas.
While this might not be true, it certainly speaks to a fear that Arsenal fans have developed over the past few seasons. We have lost too many good players to other clubs offering more money, and now that we have the resources to play with, it is justified to use them to secure the future of our best talents.
