Arsene Wenger admits he was reluctant to re-sign Mathieu Flamini but is glad he did because of how vital his compatriot has proved to the make-up of his Arsenal side.
The 29-year-old signed on for a second spell with the Gunners in August after leaving Arsene Wenger’s side on a free transfer in 2008 to join the Rossoneri.
Arsene Wenger believes the 29-year-old midfielder can prove to be a vital cog in Arsenal’s quest to end their trophy drought.
Speaking to Arsenal official website, he said:
First of all I believe that he realised what he had here. When you’re very young, it is difficult to understand what he had at Arsenal.
I must say I was reluctant to sign him again but he was so honest in his statement that he wants to play the kind of football we play, that he wants to help us to win. He convinced me through his attitude and his desire in training that he will be the right signing for us.
It was his attitude. He could have gone somewhere else. He had offers but he wanted to put it right with this club and I think he felt somewhere that he had something to bring to the piece here. He was determined to do that.
Wenger is hoping that Flamini who started the 3-1 victory over Sunderland on Saturday can emerge as a key figure in an attack-minded midfield that has been accused of lacking some defensive muscle. He added:
[He is] absolutely crucial to the balance of the team. He has done very well. He had not played since May and when you see how well he came in, it shows you how well, how focused and how dedicated he was in his preparation.

He’s got what is needed in every team. I wouldn’t say we lacked that as much as people say but he is of course important for the balance of the team that we have players with his qualities.
When Arsenal announced the signing of Mathieu Flamini on a three year deal, a lot of Arsenal fans were dumb struck on the clubs decision and even went on to criticize Wenger. The fans were really disappointed because they were expecting a better signing in the defensive midfield position but all they got was a free agent with some below average performances in the past few seasons.
A few weeks on and suddenly we realize how good a signing he is. His performances against Tottenham and Sunderland proved that he still hasn’t lost his emaculate touch. His signing might actually turn out to be a master stroke because he gives us an experienced defensive midfielder which we have lacked from the past few years. He can also play as a make shift defender if at all we need one.
I think Flamini has already showed his worth and also his passion for the game, club and determination to be successful. He will be a great asset for the Gunners this season and will definitely help the club push for that elusive title.
