Arsene Wenger is well known for his cautious behaviour in the transfer market; the veteran Frenchman is always on the lookout for a bargain. He also likes to bring in youth who he can then mould into the club’s style of play.
One such player is on the transfer radar of Arsenal, according to the latest reports. Andrey Onana, a Barcelona youth keeper, has been followed personally by chief Gunners scout Francis Cagigao since January, and the scout has been urging Wenger to buy the player.
The Gunners reportedly made an approach for the Cameroonian during the summer, but the youngster chose to sign a new contract with the Catalans instead. Wenger has not given up yet however, and may look to renew his interest in the future.
Onana has been impressive in games with the youth side, but has not yet been called up to the senior squad, and with the purchases of Claudio Bravo and Marc Andre ter Stegen over the summer, the Barcelona side look unlikely to give this youngster any playing time. Thus Wenger may have better luck if he tries in January.
Arsenal already have Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina in their ranks but are keen to start building for the future, and Onana has been tipped to become a world-class shotstopper. Such a player appeals to Wenger, and we may soon see Onana make the journey to Arsenal like many other Barcelona players before him.
