Former Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit claims Arsene Wenger isn’t looking to sign a striker this summer as he already has Danny Welbeck and Olivier Giroud, suggesting that Jamie Vardy – if he arrives – would be utilised as a wide forward, as reported by The Telegraph.

We’ve been heavily linked with Vardy over the last few days, although now it looks as though a decision won’t be made on his future until after the Euro 2016 Championships.
Despite Arsenal fans calling for a new striker to be signed for years now though, Petit doesn’t believe that is why Vardy is being signed – if he even is being signed. The Frenchman believes that with Giroud and Welbeck at the club there’s no way Wenger could fit Vardy in up front, so he must be signing him as an option out wide.
“Arsene wants him because he knows what he could bring: fighting spirit. Vardy is a scoring machine. Also he will bring to the team speed and anger,” he said.
“Maybe Arsene wants someone to play on the left, with Sanchez on the right. With Giroud and Welbeck it would be difficult to play him down the middle, so I suspect he wants him on the left.

“Arsene’s problem is he has had so many players out injured for so long. Vardy is not often injured. He will be available. And he is a late starter, so he is hungry. He’s a good addition to the team.”
While it’s not out of the question that Vardy could spend some time on the wings – as he has done with England recently – it seems highly unlikely that Wenger would bring him to the club with that position in mind.
Arsenal transfer news
We undoubtedly need a new striker this summer, as not only is Welbeck out injured for at least half the season, but Giroud really isn’t cutting it as our lone striker. Wenger will no doubt be thrilled with the versatility Vardy has in his locker, but if he’s signing him as a winger and neglecting the striking role then the fans will be furious.
