Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has revealed to the Mirror that the secret recipe for success in goal is to communicate clearly with his back line.
Cech recently broke the Premier League record for total number of clean sheets ever kept, by notching up his 170th clean sheet – overtaking David James who had kept 169 of them.
The Czech national has now revealed that the secret to his clean sheets record is that he speaks to each member of his defensive shield in their own native tongue. Cech has command over an astonishing number of languages including Czech, German, French, Spanish, and English, and he says the language barrier can be a problem in defence if not sorted out. He therefore prefers speaking to all his defenders in a language that they find comfortable.
“I speak to the full-backs in Spanish, to Koscielny in French and to Per in English because for him it is the same as me,” said Cech.
“He organises people in English. Sometimes foreign players wouldn’t know what you say. That’s when you realise it’s easier to say it in their language than hoping they will understand. It can happen,” he explained.
