Arsene Wenger was impressed by the likes of Chuks Aneke, Thomas Eisfeld, Benik Afobe and Nico Yennaris during their stint in the Far East as part of the clubs preseason preparations, but also the Frenchman curiously tipped some 16-17 year-old’s to push for a first team spot this season.
One of these talented youngsters has just signed his first professional contract with Arsenal – midfielder Serge Gnabry, and after some impressive early performances with the reserve team last term we may see more of the highly rated German this season.
The 17 year old joined the Gunners on a scholarship last summer from VfB Stuttgart and has since made a stamp on the Arsenal U18’s and reserve sides with a string on impressive displays including a well taken debut goal against Crystal Palace totaling six goals in eight appearances for the young side, and he then went on to net a respectable two times in six reserve team appearances.
The attacking midfielder is known for his strength and pace, and clearly has an eye for goal. Wenger’s side desperately needs a new influential attacking midfielder to compete with Ramsey and the injury-prone Rosicky, Eisfeld looks like he may play a part in the season too, but perhaps Gnabry’s promise will make him an actual possibility for first team football this season.
Congratulations to the exciting youngster, and good luck for the coming season!
