Arsenal’s scouting network has identified Benfica youngster Diogo Goncalves as a possible transfer target. The 19-year-old is yet to play for the Benfica first team but has represented Portugal at youth level (via The Daily Mail).
He isn’t exactly the big name striker Arsenal fans are after this year but The Gunners are tracking Benfica B youngster Diogo Goncalves. The 19-year-old caught the attention of scout Gilles Grimandi in the UEFA Youth League last season and is now being closely followed by fellow scout Luis Boa Morte.
Goncalves has been tipped to breakthrough to the Benfica first team this year after impressing during his 48 appearances for the club’s B team. The 19-year-old shone during the recent UEFA European Under-19 Championships in Germany, being named as one of the tournament’s top ten players.
Goncalves has been deployed out wide for his country but could switch to the centre in the future. He is just being tracked by the club at this stage with no move on the cards as of yet. Should he sign, the Portuguese would be the second young attacker to move to the Emirates this summer following the move for Takuma Asano. However we revealed yesterday that the Japanese forward has had his application for a work permit turned down and cannot represent the club without first appealing the decision.
So perhaps a move for Goncalves would make sense. The 19-year-old is clearly talented and certainly one for the future. Portuguese football has been a gold mine for young players in recent years and perhaps the Benfica man is the next big thing.
