The season may have only just finished but Arsenal have been handed some bad injury news with reports that Santi Cazorla may not play again until the winter. The Spaniard hasn’t played all year and has opened up about his injury problems (via The Independent).
He’s become something of a forgotten man at Arsenal and that doesn’t show any signs of changing. Santi Cazorla was the squad’s most important player at points last season. His central midfield performances helped the Gunners tick and his absence was certainly noticeable.
The Spaniard hasn’t played since October and has had an incredible eight operations since then. The 32-year-old even considered retirement during what he calls “the worst season of [his] career.”
“You feel like throwing in the towel but my desire to play football is above everything,” he told Spanish outlet Cadena Ser. “I haven’t been given a timeframe [to return to action]. It’s very difficult to put a date, but I don’t think it will be before five months.
“It’s been since October that I last played. I’ve undergone eight surgeries, the last one yesterday [Monday]. I hope that things go better.”
The were reports that Cazorla was battling a niggling injury during last summer but few expected the Spaniard to miss as much football as he has. The Spaniard went on to explain the problems.

“I’ve had complications since November. I got a bacterial infection in surgery, my bone got infected, the wound would not close and I had a graft done.
“I remember I had a bad spell with a back problem [while with Villarreal in 2010] but this is worse because it [healing] doesn’t depend on me. Right now I can’t think about the future, I just want to return to play.”
Arsenal fan will be wanting the same and Cazorla took the time to praise the club for standing by him.
“They have been very good to me,” he said. “They gave me a contract extension before I had my surgery. The coach spoke to me and reassured me.”
It’s been awful to see Santi Cazorla miss so much football. The Spaniard is one of the most technically gifted players Arsenal have had in recent years and he has been sorely missed at points this season. The Granit Xhaka and Aaron Ramsey partnership is working well in this system but it’s still a shame not to see Santi Cazorla in the Arsenal midfield. Hopefully, the recovery will go well for the little man and we’ll see him back in an Arsenal shirt next season.
