It might just be time for arsenal to change formation back to 4-4-2. Maybe it is time to ditch this 4-2-3-1 formation. I’ll accept that it has served Wenger well in the Champions League before. He reached the final in 2005/06 season playing with our current formation so one can make a case for using this formation in Europe. It requires one to be patient and defensively stable. It is a whole different matter using our current formation in the Premier League where we barely trouble opponents and have so few shots on goal.
We have won so many trophies playing with a 4-4-2 formation. The question is whether we have the personnel. In ’98 we had Anelka as our striker and all the way to 2004, we were able to call on the services of Thierry Henry. Obviously we have always relied on quick strikers to tear defences apart. However, a strong striker like Giroud can become incredible if he receives crosses from both wings. He scored a bullet header against Newcastle thanks to a brilliant cross from Ozil so we all know what he can do. Look at how many goals Trezeguet used to score when he played for Juventus and France? I am not convinced Theo Walcott can play as a striker. He is too weak and injury prone so we cannot trust him to lead the line although his finishing is quite good.
Thierry Henry’s partner in crime was Dennis Bergkamp. We definitely have quite a number of players who can play his role including, Rosicky, Ozil, and Carzola. The support striker will benefit from a lot of knock downs from Giroud and so we can expect to get a lot of goals from them.
One position that will need to be addressed is defensive midfield. That requires a strong midfielder who can protect the back four. We will have to dip in to the transfer market to solve that problem as none of those we currently have are up to the task. We have very many wingers although we can always get more for cover.
If Arsenal was to switch to 4-4-2, I guarantee our attack would not be so blunt like it currently is. We would be more direct and score many more goals. Arsene Wenger once said he did not have the personnel to play 4-4-2. I think now he does, and should, to make us the team that was once feared by opponents.
