Tony Adams has hailed Laurent Koscielny as the new Martin Keown in Arsenal’s defence. The Frenchman produced some outstanding performances alongside Per Mertesacker in the Gunners’ march to fourth last season, and legend Adams is convinced Arsene Wenger has unearthed an old school marshal in the 27-year-old.
Arsene Wenger has struggled with defensive pairings of late, with Thomas Vermaelen struggling for form and Sebastien Squillaci released at the end of last season after making just 23 Premier League appearances in three seasons at the Emirates Stadium.
However, both Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertsesacker came to the fore, conceding just four goals in the 10 games they started together as the season drew to a close, and Adams has backed the pair to thrive again next term.
According to Arsenal.com ,he said :
Koscielny was brilliant [at the end of last season]
He reminds me a lot of Martin Keown. He’s very tenacious. I hate labelling people because Martin Keown was one of the best we’ve ever had. But there are similarities there, the way Koscielny marks and his last-ditch tackles.
He’s tenacious in the tackle. [When it came to] that tight, one-to-one defending, there wasn’t a better player that I’ve played with, [than Keown]. To put Koscielny in the same category [to Keown] is an enormous compliment I think.
Adams also praised Mertesacker, whose relationship with Koscielny was vital to Arsenal’s strong end-of-season form.

I think he’s a really nice boy and, in a few games at the end of the season, he started to push people around and say ‘come on.I think he came out of himself a bit more. He’s a fantastic player.
I thought Arsenal were first class defensively. But you defend as a team. That’s what the philosophy of Arsenal always has been – attack as a team and defend as a team. The [attacking players] need to put a shift in as well.
We looked better when we’ve had two in front of the centre halves. Later on in the season, with Ramsey and Arteta, I think it looked much better.
The 27-year-old French international has become one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and has attracted interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.Barcelona and Bayern Munich have both reportedly identified Koscielny as a potential new recruitment.
Laurent Koscielny is probably Arsenal’s best defender, his aforementioned partnership with Per Mertesacker ensured the club secured a top four finish and finished above their bitter rivals, Spurs.
Next season, Laurent Koscielny will turn 28. He is about to hit his peak.If Arsenal really want to challenge for honours next season they’d do well to keep hold of their prized defender, as well as bring in another established Premier League defender.
