Details of Mesut Ozil’s transfer to Arsenal have been revealed, with suggestions Real Madrid inserted a buy-back clause in the £37.95m agreement from the summer of 2013, according to this leaked document on Football Leaks. This is now a common occurrence but is thankfully unlikely to affect Ozil’s future at the club.
Leaked transfer documents reveal the La Liga giants inserted a clause to ensure they have first refusal to re-sign the World Cup winner should the Gunners look to sell their record signing, similarly to the clause Arsene Wenger inserted into Cesc Fabregas’ agreement with Barcelona, however primarily to another Spanish club.
The report suggests Real could collect as much as 33% of the profit should the Gunners sell Ozil to a rival La Liga outfit for more than €50million. Given Arsenal’s previous regular dealings with Barcelona, it was hardly an unimaginable scenario a number of years ago.
Such clauses have become almost staple in most big transfers these days, but luckily for Arsenal the days of being a selling club have passed.
Arsenal did well in negotiations to avoid a true buy-back clause that would have allowed the Spaniards to exercise the right to purchase a sold player for £XX million. Madrid were desperate to sell in the wake of their extortionate Gareth Bale deal. Such buy-back clauses are something that is becoming even more common especially in deals for younger and promising players that have yet to make the grade yet.
Is the transfer landscape now becoming a sticky field with a variety of complex clauses out there? To date it’s worked in our favour and should the Gunners carry on making sensible decisions they can continue work in our favour. We didn’t sign Cesc because of the midfielders we have and the club’s suggestions the Spaniard is past his best years. Something that has partly come to fruition given his inconsistent form over the last twelve months.
