According to Metro, the Gunners are closing in on Bayern Munich’s defensive midfielder Luiz Gustavo in a reported £14m deal.
Arsenal are yet to make a senior signing this summer, with their only recruit this summer being the free transfer of youngster Yaya Sanogo, and a host of players departing the club, leaving the squad rather thin.
A new defensive midfielder has been on the cards for a while with Wenger unable to bring in a suitable replacement after the departure of Alex Song to Barcelona last year, and Gustavo’s name has been flirted with the north London side all summer.
The Brazilian, who can fill in at the back if required, was unable to crack into the Bayern Munich starting lineup for much of last season after the Bavarians bought Javi Martinez and is believed to be available to leave.
According to the report, Arsenal have reached an agreement with Munich for the 26-year-old, so now their attentions turn to agreeing personal terms with Gustavo.

The Brazilian international would be a decent signing for the Gunners who need to add some strength and physicality to the midfield. He only managed to start 16 Bundesliga games last season but was a key member of this summers Brazilian Confederations Cup winning side.
Admittedly anything that comes out of Metro must be taken with a huge grain of salt, but Gooners need some exciting news after a summer full of disappointments and frustrations.
Lets hope this turns into something as Gustavo could well be a smart acquisition and get the ball rolling for Arsenal’s shopping spree.
