Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, according to reports in Daily Star.
The 23 year old has been the subject of intense transfer speculation in recent months, following a series of scintillating performances for the Bundesliga giants.
The German international played an influential role in Jurgen Klopp’s side during their run to the 2013 Champions League final, and has attracted a growing list of admirers from a number of top clubs around Europe.
The report suggests that Arsenal could make a move in the next transfer window, however Barcelona and Manchester United are also thought to be interested in the German international. Dortmund rate him in the £25 million bracket and will be reluctant to sell at anything lower.
It further states that Gundogan may favour the Emirates if he did decide to move as Arsenal already have a strong German presence in the dressing room, with the likes of Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski all playing for the north London club.

Gundogan was born in Gelsenkirchen, which is the home of Schalke and joined them when he was 9 years old after playing for youth side SV-Hessler 06. After suffering an injury he was forced to leave which prompted him to return to Hessler and he later rejected another approach from Schalke a few years later to return to their youth set-up. He joined Bochum in 2008 aged 17 and he was soon involved with their second team but moved to FC Nurnberg with the prospect of first-team football – he agreed a two-year deal.
In 2011 he had an outstanding campaign with five goals for Nurnberg which prompted Dortmund to spend €4.5 million to secure the highly rated midfielder, as he quickly slotted into the vacant role left by the departed Sahin. By the start of last season he became a first team regular and he is fast becoming a top class player.
The 23 year old is a box-to-box midfielder and can also operate just in front of the back four but is also creative when it comes to the final third. He is a fine reader of the game, able to both stay on his feet to intercept passes and go to ground to challenge for the ball. He is a true visionary in possession and can dictate a game’s tempo with real authority and has a decent shot on him too.
The Gunners have plenty of talent in the midfield, so even if we make a move for him he will most probably be slotted into defensive midfield a position that could use some strengthening in the future with Arteta in his thirties while Flamini isn’t far behind. Arsenal will face tough competition from Barcelona but do have the advantage of having a strong German contingent which might convince him to make a move to the Emirates.
Should we sign Gundogan? It’s a nice idea in theory, but he’s hardly the type of player we need. We are far better off spending the cash on a top class striker! Do you agree? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
